2021 is on the horizon. Do you know what to expect coming up?
Looking back, 2020 can be chalked up as one big life lesson. Sure, kids were mostly out of school for the majority of the year (sorry, seniors), but things to learn were not in short supply for any person, nor any industry.
Designers, for example, moved, grooved, and adapted to the emotions that ran high from January to December. When your work tends to be is a direct reflection of emotion, it's difficult not to change with the world around you.
But, before we hop, skip, and jump into 2021, let's take a look at what we learned about design in 2020 and how we think it'll shape this coming year in this handy infographic:
Not only do words have an impact, but their design do, too. These days social media is creating an enormous impact and there’s no better way to quickly get your point across than by giving your words a little extra umph with creative designs.
Textures don’t just provide us with something nice to touch and look at, they also have the ability to provide us with a sense of calm. While the world continues to provide us with a baseline level of stress that is higher than usual in 2021, design will look to do what it can by highlighting different styles of textures.
Nostalgia – it never goes out of style. Truly, one of the most tapped into emotions when appealing to people is the timeless throwback. Scrunchies? Always in. Mom jeans? Those, too. We’ve seen it recently in sports where teams will add throwback jerseys to their uniform rotation and there’s no indication this trend will stop anytime soon.
Our world is made up of many different backgrounds and it’s about time design catches up to that – and they’re starting to. Companies like Band-Aid and Crayola have begun including a spectrum of skin tone colors to more accurately reflect the world around them. Design is starting to catch up and there’s no stopping it now.
From how things are going right now, it seems like we’re going to be living with the realities of COVID-19 for the foreseeable future. This means we’re going to be seeing collaborations between artists, influencers, companies – you name it. Humans tend to crave connection and will look to create it this way.
In the time it took you to read this blog, you got this much closer to 2021 -- congratulations! Or, if you're reading this in the far future -- how is it?
Design is poised to make huge waves in the coming year to compensate for the lack of physical human connection. Nothing can replace a real hug, but an aesthetically appealing "Sending Hugs" greeting card is by far better than nothing.
Unfortunately, there's really no way to know what'll happen in the future, but if we're lucky, 2021 won't be as unpredictable as 2020.
